Google is testing a new way to experience search results. As of Friday (June 13), a new Search Labs experiment allows U.S users to try out Audio Overviews, short audio summaries of search results generated by Gemini AI.
These summaries offer a casual, podcast-style explanation of complex topics. When users search a query, they may see a Generate Audio Overview button. Once clicked, Google will generate an audio version of the search summary, complete with a simple audio player and clickable source links.
Google Audio overviews utilize two AI voices to deliver the content and appear lower on the AI overview, typically under the ‘People also ask’ section. The experience is meant to be hands-free and helpful for multitasking or those who prefer audio content over reading.
While the feature is similar to what was introduced in NotebookLM in 2024, the main difference is that this version gathers data from ranking websites, not your personal documents.
Each overview includes source citations through carousels of websites, as well as playback controls and a thumbs-up and thumbs-down button for user feedback. Google takes 40 seconds to generate Audio Overviews for search results.
This test is a part of Google Labs smarter, voice-first search tools powered by AI—and it might just be the start of more global rollouts.
