Microsoft has quietly changed how long Windows 11 keeps your system restore points. As of the June 2025 update (version 24H2), restore points will now be deleted after 60 days, down from the 90-day limit most users were used to.
It might seem minor, but it’s a bigger deal than it looks. Restore points are your PC’s “undo” button—great for rolling back updates or fixing weird issues. But now, with a shorter 60-day limit, those backups could disappear before you even think to use them. If you’re not checking settings or creating them yourself, you might be out of luck when something goes wrong.
Forbes reports that Microsoft made the change to streamline recovery and improve system performance. But it also means users need to take a more hands-on approach.
How to Protect Your PC from Windows 11 Restore Point Auto-Delete
- Search “Recovery” in the Start menu
- Click “Create a Restore Point.”
- Make sure System Protection is turned on
- Manually create a restore point, especially before updates
